PERSONAL PRAYER AND
BIBLE STUDY SEMINAR
I was saved on October 1, 1965, and soon
after that I received some of the most important counsel
of my life from a Baptist and a Presbyterian pastor.
The Baptist pastor told me that if I would begin to
study my Bible as though it was another course I was
taking in college, I would never regret it. I did,
and I have never regretted it! And the Presbyterian
pastor introduced me to the glorious truth of conversing
with God based on Philippians 4:6-7. These two foundational
pillars of my Christian life have sustained me for
over thirty-six years as a believer, and I want, by
God’s grace, to impart the blessing they have
been to me to others.
Therefore, this seminar is aimed at helping
believers to establish a personal and systematic prayer
and Bible study time. When I began my own personal
prayer and Bible study time in college as a new believer,
I had no real guidelines as to what to do, or how to
do it. However, the Lord gave me some basic principles
that have remained with me to this day, and it is those
principles that I share. One of the most important
principles is that as believers, we desperately need
to hear from God directly, through His Word, as the
primary source for spiritual nourishment and direction
for our lives, and secondarily from the messages and
teachings of others. However, all too often this input
is turned the other way around, and, consequently,
we do not grow and mature spiritually and emotionally,
but remain in a place of infancy, and such infancy
can be quite costly as a result of not abiding in God’s
Word first hand. The same is true for prayer and our
need to have a personal time alone with God ourselves,
versus constantly going to others for their advice
and direction. The former produces stability and assurance
of God’s direction in our life, while the latter
can actually exacerbate our insecurities and fears
and lead to greater emotional instability.
The book I use for the Bible Study Seminar
is Search the Scripture. It is published by Inter Varsity
Press, and edited by Alan Stibbs. I provide my own
material for the Prayer Seminar. This seminar is ten
hours long and may be taught in a weekend session,
or it may be taught over a five week or ten week period,
meeting either one night a week for two hours or one
hour respectively. I will be more than happy to accommodate
your schedule if you would like me to come and conduct
this seminar for your congregation.
Janie and I would be honored to serve
you in any way we can. If you have any questions, please
do not hesitate to contact us, and may the Lord continue
to bless you in every way. Thanks for your consideration
of and prayers for us.
Sincerely in Christ,
Justin T. Alfred
